Light A Candle!

Spanky
1995 - 2003
“One moment can change a day, one day can change a life and one life can change the world.”
– Buddha
A few months back I heard cover of Neil Young's
Heart Of Gold.
It was a version by Passenger.
The video was an emotional viewing for me.
I did find my "Heart of Gold".
Fifteen years ago, today, we bade "adios" to Spanky.
It was a day filled with her favourite things...
restaurant patio time and finally eating that tuna sandwich...
pizza at the ballpark...
and a walk on the beach .
September 5, 2003 was not to be the end of her story...

"Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle,
and the life of that candle will not be shortened"

.... on December 14, 2003 that first candle was lit.
The Spanky Project was born with the goal of..
“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.”
... she gave me that purpose!

May Spanky's legacy carry on ... well beyond my years.

Kindred Spirits

The further I get along in years the more I value the friends I have come to know.
Especially the close ones who have been in my life for decades.
How decades you ask?
Well, I have known this table since the early 70's.
You can imagine the stories that were recounted.
We gathered for tapas ahead of a party for another dear friend.
Us and maybe ... 100 others.
So, we go through the decades knowing people.
Friending people .. some closer than others.
Getting closer to some in a variety of ways.
Like, reading each others posts on the internet and being amazed.
Being drawn together by a mutual passion...
a love for animals
... and a bond is formed.
Then after a few years of saying "Let's do coffee", and it not happening, you both show up  at the 60th birthday party for a friend.
The friend being Tom. That's him on the left.
Then after a few hours of mingling with a huge room of friends
you finally get together to chat.
YES ... Live and in person.
A meeting of friends.
A meeting of Kindred Spirits

"Kindred Spirits are two people that make a special connection by sharing a bond that has joined them by the means of an experience that has drawn them together on a higher level of consciousness. This connection can be from the same experience at the same time
or two separate experiences similar in nature"

It was such a great pleasure to spend time with Michele.
Talking about our respective animal welfare initiatives just reinforced a bond created in the digital world.
Talking about the things that others just don't get and gaining strength from that.

Our friend Sandy captured the image of
Michele and I.
She posted it and many other party photos on Facebook a few days later.
With the posting of the photo came comments from a couple of Kindred Spirits

"My Kindred Spirit, Terry Shewchuk. I love this man for what he stands for and the work he does. Terry is the founder of Spanky Project.
Terry organises trips to Cuba a few times a year to spay and neuter the dogs and cats in the streets and for the people that cannot afford these services.
Terry has an incredible team of veterinarians and volunteers.

I am so proud to call him my friend.
Thank you my friend for all the "right" you do in this world!"

"To my Kindred Spirit Michele Bower. I share the same love and admiration for you and your work with Boxer Rescue Ontario.
In the animal welfare world you are the ones that do the heavy lifting.
You see the abuse the hurt and the pain.
I know it talks a toll.
Only the bravest, strongest and most loving can do the work you do.
You are angels from above to those that have been beaten down.
You raise them up to live life again.

Abrazos mi Amiga!!!!!"

Boxer Rescue Ontario (BRO) had it's beginnings in 2000. It is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to placing abandoned, injured or lost boxers in loving homes.
Michele tells me in the beginning the intake was 36 dogs for the year.
Now it is 200 annually.
Awesome people doing amazing work.
BRO could sure use your support.

The Spanky Project has been helping Cubans help their animals since 2003.
Based in Havana they conduct free spay/neuter clinic.

"Love is touching souls"

I do love the tax payer funded CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) and CBC Radio 2.
Radio 2 is one of the constants being streamed from my Samsung tablet through my 1977 Technics SA-5270 35 watt receiver.
Old and new come together for pure joy and entertainment.
This morning listening to Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe's Weekend Morning came a treasure.

A cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You"
Well not a total cover. Leave it to Prince to put a twist on things.
He plucks a verse and there's the song.

Here is Joni's masterpiece. I've included the lyrics so you can sing along.

Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star and I said,
Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter
And so sweet oh
I could drink a case of you darling and I would
Still be on my feet
Oh I would still be on my feet
Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time that you told me, you said
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine 'cause
Part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter
And so sweet oh
I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'ld be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours, she knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds and she said
"Go to him
stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed"
Oh but you are in my blood you're my holy wine
You're so bitter
bitter and so sweet oh
I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I'ld still be on my feet
hmm

And now for ...
I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I used to be frightened by the devil
And drawn to those who weren't afraid
Remember when you told me
That love was touching souls?
Well, surely you touched mine
Part of you pours out of me from time to time in these lines

You are in my blood like holy wine
You are so bitter and so sweet
I could drink a case of you darling
And still be on my feet
Still be on my feet

You are in my blood like holy wine
So bitter, so bitter, so bitter
And so sweet
I could drink a case of you darling
And still be on my feet
Still be on my feet
Still be on my feet
And still be on my feet

CLIC - Eastern Ontario Photo Show 2011

Well, today The County got some much needed rain.
We took this opportunity to load Skeeter into the car and head to Picton for
CLIC - Eastern Ontario Photo Show.

Located at 289 Main Street Picton,
Books & Company
hosted this event in their fabulous second story space.

As per normal, awards are handed out at these events.

Best In Show went to Dawn Oosterhoff from Ottawa.

I was honoured to have one of my photos recognized...

... as were eight others.
Nine photographers CLIC with jurors
If you find yourself in Eastern Ontario, on or before the August 7th. head to
Books & Company in Picton and take in this feast for the eyes.

A big thank you to the organizers and volunteers.
Special thanks to Dave Hill. Dave dropped of my photographs while I headed for the mountains of Mexico.

Kudos to Sue Barclay for her "Fab" grouping of the photographs.
Oh, just so you know, Sue can keep a secret. We had dinner with Sue and, her photographer husband, Sam a week before the show. She knew of "I'll Fly Away" placing third.
She never let on.
Sue, next year I'll bring an extra bottle of a local vintage to loosen those lips.

Call Me A Pinhead

As summer is poised to make it's annual return, we welcome the 18th year of
This annual event takes place in Picton, Ontario.
Located in Prince Edward County, this is the area I call home.

The juried show is open to residents of "The County" which has a wealth of talented artists.

This year I have delved into the world of pinhole photography.
Digital be damned.
Give me a tin can with an f100 aperture, some photo paper and I'm good to go.
Morning Coffee

I Can Fly

This photo was captured on December 2006 in La Habana, Cuba.
The event was a people's march to the Plaza de la Revolución on the 50th anniversary of the landing of the Granma.
In essence the beginning of the Cuban revolution.

Art in the County

Art in the County 2009 has come to a close.

Congratulations go to Steven Draper for being awarded the Doug Boult Award. His image “Reflections on a Train Journey” took the award for outstanding photography.

This will not be the year’s last opportunity to see what artistic talent “The County” has to offer.
Beginning September 18th and continuing throughout the weekend, the Prince Edward County Studio and Gallery Tour holds it’s 2009 edition.
Mags Kandis and myself will be displaying our works at the Makers of Stuff Gallery.
We are number 6 on the map.

For a sneak peak of this event you can drop by the Belleville Public Library and visit the Parrott Gallery where Curator Susan Holland has assembled the works of Prince Edward County artists.
Soñar

On display is my work entitled Soñar. This image was captured in Oaxaca Mexico during "Dia De Los Muertos" October 2008.

Art In The County

On Monday, two of my photographs were delivered to the Picton Town Hall (thanks Mags).
These works were to be considered for inclusion in a local event called Art in the County.
In 2007 one of my photogrphs was shown during this event.

"After The Storm"

Today my photos went to the jury for possible inclusion in the 2009 edition.
"Si Se Puede"

"Santa Cocoa"

I am pleased to report that “Si Se Puede” will be included in this years show.
Pieces that were not accepted were picked up today and artists were allowed the opportunity to have a critique by the jurors.

I had the great please to spend time with juror/ photographer Richard Martin.
Richard is a contributor to Photo Life magazine and offers photographic and visual design workshop/seminars in his hometown of Kingston, ON and around the world.

Don’t feel sorry for “Santa Cocoa”. Each entrant was allowed to offer two pieces for consideration. With 180 pieces offered for some 80 spaces, many excellent works were victims of the numbers. Richard had some kind words for my pieces. Especially appreciated was the comment that “Si Se Puede” was a "powerful image". It took on an added dimension for Richard when I told him it was captures in Time Square, NY during Barack Obama’s Inauguration.

If you find yourself in the Picton area between June 19 and July 5 drop into the Old Town Hall at King & Ross ST. and enjoy the creativity of local artists.
And as always you are welcome at the Makers of Stuff Gallery.
